Taking its inspiration from the minimal synth and coldwave genres of the 1980s, Soma Sema exists as the musical collaboration of Clara Hall (voice) and Th. Tot (machines). With interest and experience in working with other forms of music, including pop, drone and noise, Soma Sema seeks to simultaneously transcend and pay homage to the wave genre. The project’s music experiments with ambient interludes while nevertheless embracing pop structures. I stumble across this indie band and I wanted to do a remix because I enjoyed the original video’s aesthetics. The original video has a woman in black and white at the fore of city landscapes. The filter effects on the video almost has a halftone effect on it. It’s a pretty cool video. I thought the lyrics were very basic but with intrigued and captivated was the simplicity and the stickiness of the melodic elements. I also enjoy the way the words are elongated and legato. It was stuck in my head after very little time the next morning.

Here’s a little release I found that I thought would be interesting to create a remix. I started off wanting to strip the vocals off the track but I decided not to and just left it as is, as I didn’t have any stems for it (The stems are also known as the multi tracks.) The way I started the track is I added some percussive instrumentation and I evolve the track as I saw fit. I begin to draw some erie synthetic sounds and I beef up the original percussion and drums. But the greatest attention I drew was to have some respective piano that complimented the song very well. It worked out pretty good. Check it out!
