GLAMATRON! is a post-punk electronic/rock band created by Rude van Steenes (ARSON, Vis-A-Vis) and Kurt LaPorte out of Toronto, Canada.

Rude van Steenes' GLAMATRON! was the antithesis of his previous Toronto punk act ARSON. Channeling his anger into a New Wave stew of his heroes from the seventies like Bowie, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, Marc Bolan & T-Rex, in image while singing songs of isolation and experimentation that was distinctly Euro flavoured. The band did only three shows: one at the Domino Klub in Toronto, one for a live CBC new music series, and a college show. They were aloof and secretive to the point of re-buffing CITY-TV's 'New Music' show host Jeanne Bekker who had wanted an interview during their Domino Klub show. 'Only The Heart Beats...Inside The Silence' was their only release. Local rock station Q107-FM played their instrumental track called "Passport" in light rotation.

Where to begin, where to begin, let's start with the slow demise of the original, first generation Toronto punk rock scene. Having been part of that scene since late '76 and forming ARSON with Marcel LaFleur in the Fall of "77, we rocked through it's halcyon era as a Stooges/MC5/New York Dolls influenced rock 'n roll band with a healthy dose of attitude. By the end of 1979, the scene was disintegrating and the survivors walked away to recreate or reinvent.

ARSON finished it's US dates at Max's Kansas City in New York, played a few local dates recorded an Animals cover and went on an unlimited hiatus in the middle of 1980.

Frustrated, tired and needing a drastic change, I met guitarist Kurt LaPorte and began a writing binge. We found Rick (Krausminc) and Max (Hutchison) and started turning rough ideas into songs. Armed with 6 tracks, we headed into Great Shakes, a basement 8-track studio, and recorded and produced the self-financed EP, "Inside The Silence". We had about 900 copies pressed, had posters printed and took the product to various record stores and were allowed to put up our own displays in some of the downtown shops and that was the beginning.

We worked with the owner of Cadillac Walk and decided the best hand to play would be to create an aura of mystique to promote the band and the record as no one really knew who we were. My previous band, ARSON, was never mentioned while my hair went from short, spikey black to a wavy blonde coif, transition was necessary and complete. New wardrobe, new attitude paying homage to my sixties and seventies influences and rockin'.

The "re-buffing CITY-TV's 'New Music' show host Jeanne Bekker who had wanted an interview during their Domino Klub show" story is true. They actually showed a clip of the chase on the following episode of the New Music, all good fun!
Over time, there were many changes with the final lineup including Rick (Krausminc), Scott (Matthews), Rob (Greenway) and myself. It was a great period of experimentation influenced by John Foxx era Ultravox, Roxy Music, Bowie, Japan, Lou Reed, T-Rex, etc., etc., and we made some great music together!

One minor correction to the encyclopedia entry, we actually did play some other dates in various forms, for example, The Rivoli show which was the guitar-less 4 piece version seen in the color photo. We also recorded material for a followup record which has now been released on Artoffact Records along with the first original album. Titled 'Inside The Silence/Chrome Horizons', it's available in multiple formats including 12" vinyl, CD and Bandcamp, iTunes, etc.

Currently, there is a move underway to bring the sounds of GLAMATRON! and Vis-A-Vis back to life for some live shows and adventures in the next while so stay tuned!
